Orange Underwing

The Orange Underwing is a very local but often numerous moth where it occurs. It is one of the earliest day-flying moths to emerge with adults on the wing in bright sunshine from mid-March to late April. It is often seen feeding on Sallow catkins or basking on the ground.

It occurs in Birch woodland with good numbers seen at Oakley Wood, Oversley Wood, Clowes Wood and Wappenbury Wood.

The Orange Underwing is very similar to the less common Light Orange Underwing
